Ugly children

There is a picture floating around on Facebook that shows Maxine (of cartoon fame) with the meme:

I chuckled at it first like I assume many others have.  After all, everyone thinks their children are the handsomest, smartest, ultimate kiddos around.

But then I got to thinkin......
What does Ugly mean??

A child (or person) can be strikingly beautiful on the outside, but have a heart of steel inside.  A young man can be a star on the ball field and a mean bully in the locker room.  Girls can sit in the pew with their parents on Sunday and spread slanderous gossip on the way home.
Ugly is all inside, in my opinion; not outside.

We parents are commissioned to raise beautiful souls that house the Holy Spirit.  At our child's baptism, we form a covenant with God to raise the children gifted to us in the faith and community of Jesus.  There is beauty in the stepping back (as human parents) and allowing God to shine through their souls.   Not an easy task by any means, one I and Bob struggle with every day.  All of this looks and sounds more like this meme:
